The Arbroath Battery Energy Storage System is a 35 MW grid-scale battery facility located near Arbroath in Angus, Scotland, developed as part of the Gresham House Energy Storage Fund (GRID) portfolio. The site was commissioned in August 2022 and formed part of a wider expansion of utility-scale battery storage assets across Great Britain aimed at supporting the integration of renewable energy and improving grid flexibility.

The facility stores electricity when supply exceeds demand and releases it back to the grid at peak times, helping balance the GB electricity system as renewable generation increases. Arbroath contributes to GRID’s strategy of investing in battery assets that support network stability while adapting to evolving market conditions, including a growing focus on energy trading revenues as traditional frequency response markets mature.

Alongside projects such as Stairfoot and Enderby, the Arbroath BESS helped increase GRID’s operational battery capacity to around 550 MW by the end of 2022. The project reflects the fund’s broader objective of building a diversified portfolio of storage assets capable of delivering grid services and supporting long-term decarbonisation of the UK electricity system.
