Barrow Offshore Wind Farm
The Barrow Offshore Wind Farm is a 90 MW project located 7 km off Walney Island near Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Completed in 2006 at a cost of about £100 million, it was among the UK’s first offshore wind farms and is now owned and operated by Ørsted.
The site includes 30 Vestas V90-3 MW turbines on 75-metre towers in waters about 20 metres deep. Power is sent through 33 kV cables to an offshore substation, then stepped up to 132 kV for the mainland grid. Construction was led by KBR and Vestas-Celtic, with parts made at Harland and Wolff in Belfast.
Since 2006, Barrow has run at around 30–40% capacity, generating about 250–300 GWh annually — enough for 60,000 homes. One of the UK’s early offshore pioneers, it set the groundwork for larger North Sea wind developments.
