Crystal Rig Wind Farm, located in the Lammermuir Hills in the Scottish Borders, began operating in 2004 and was then Scotland’s largest wind farm. After several expansions, it remains one of the biggest in the UK by capacity and turbine count. The project was developed and owned by Fred. Olsen Renewables and is managed by Natural Power, with maintenance carried out by Siemens and Nordex SE. Siemens operates from a service centre at Crystal Rig, while Nordex’s base in Loanhead supports operations across nearby wind farms.

The wind farm was built in stages. The first phase in 2004 installed 20 Nordex N80 turbines producing 50 MW, followed by an extension in 2007 adding five more for 62.5 MW total. In 2010, Crystal Rig 2 and 2a added 60 Siemens SWT-2.3 turbines, lifting capacity to 138 MW, and Crystal Rig III in 2016 contributed another six turbines for 13.8 MW.

The upcoming Crystal Rig IV will add 11 new turbines, increasing total capacity to 262.5 MW. Power from earlier phases connects to the Dunbar substation, while later extensions use a dedicated on-site substation, ensuring reliable integration with the Scottish Power Transmission network.
