The Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm, 23 km off the Suffolk coast, is a 504 MW project jointly owned by SSE Renewables and RWE. Built at a cost of £1.5 billion, it features 140 Siemens 3.6 MW turbines completed in 2012, making it one of the world’s largest offshore wind farms at the time. Developed originally by Airtricity and Fluor, the project marked a major step in the UK’s offshore wind expansion.

Power generation began in 2010, delivering around 1.7 terawatt-hours of electricity annually — enough for 500,000 homes. Operated from Lowestoft, Greater Gabbard helped establish the region as a hub for offshore wind maintenance and innovation. Notably, engineers use a robotic “scarecrow” system to keep offshore substations clean and safe for workers.

The Galloper extension, completed in 2018, added 353 MW via 56 Siemens turbines and brought new investment from Innogy, Siemens Financial Services, Sumitomo, and Macquarie. Visible from ferries between Harwich and the Hook of Holland, the turbines remain a striking symbol of Britain’s offshore wind expertise.
