Kilgallioch Wind Farm
The Kilgallioch Wind Farm, located in South Ayrshire, is one of Scotland’s largest onshore wind projects, featuring 96 turbines with a total capacity of 239 MW. Developed by ScottishPower Renewables, it received government consent in 2013, began construction in 2015, and became fully operational in 2017. The site spans 32 km² and includes over 70 km of access tracks across upland terrain.
During construction, the project faced challenges — a turbine collapse during a storm in January 2017, and the tragic death of a worker in March 2017. Despite setbacks, Kilgallioch has since become a key contributor to Scotland’s renewable power generation, supplying clean energy to thousands of homes.
Plans for a 50 MW extension were approved in December 2021, adding nine new turbines up to 180 metres tall northwest of Kirkcowan. This expansion reinforces Kilgallioch’s role as a major wind energy hub for southwest Scotland, continuing ScottishPower’s investment in large-scale clean energy.
