Kilmarnock South BESS
Kilmarnock South Battery Energy Storage System is a large-scale battery facility located near Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire, Scotland. Developed and operated by Zenobē, the project has a capacity of 300 MW / 600 MWh. Construction began in early 2024 following Section 36 consent, and the site entered commercial operation in January 2026, making it one of the largest battery storage projects commissioned in Scotland.
The facility is designed to support the GB electricity system by storing surplus renewable energy, particularly from wind generation, and discharging it during periods of high demand. Kilmarnock South also provides grid stability services, using grid-forming inverters to help maintain system frequency and resilience, making it one of the first UK battery projects capable of delivering these services at scale.
Technology for the project was supplied by Wärtsilä, with balance-of-plant works delivered by Omexom. EDF Energy provides route-to-market services, including trading and optimisation. Zenobē has described the project as a key component of Scotland’s low-carbon infrastructure, contributing to renewable integration, reduced curtailment, and improved energy security.
