The Lakeside Energy Park Battery Energy Storage System is a 100 MW / 200 MWh grid-scale battery facility located at the Drax substation near Selby in North Yorkshire, England. Developed and owned by TagEnergy with partners Tesla, Habitat Energy and RES, it was connected to the UK transmission network in late 2024, becoming the country’s largest transmission-connected battery at the time. The connection, delivered with National Grid and contractor Omexom, included upgrades to local network infrastructure.

The Lakeside BESS supports operation of the GB electricity system by storing surplus renewable energy during low demand and supplying power back to the grid at peak times. Using Tesla lithium-ion battery technology, the facility provides balancing services that help reduce renewable curtailment, improve network flexibility and support the UK’s transition toward a net-zero electricity system.

Construction began in 2023 following financial close, with TagEnergy having acquired the site from RES in 2021 as part of the wider Lakeside Energy Park development. Once energised, the battery began delivering services to relieve network constraints and better utilise renewable generation in the region, marking an important milestone in the continued expansion of grid-scale battery storage across Britain.
