Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm (“Head of the Valleys”) lies between Neath and Aberdare in South Wales. Developed by Vattenfall, it became fully operational in 2017 and is Wales’s largest onshore wind farm, with 76 Siemens turbines generating 228 MW — enough to power 140,000 homes.

Built on land managed by Natural Resources Wales, the project operates at one of the UK’s highest altitudes. As part of its approval, Vattenfall committed £1.85 million annually to a community fund and £3 million for habitat restoration. Despite local concerns about landscape impact, planning permission was granted in 2012.

Construction began in 2014, with turbines completed by March 2017. Officially opened later that year, Pen y Cymoedd remains a landmark of Welsh renewable energy and community partnership.
