Rampion Offshore Wind Farm
The Rampion Offshore Wind Farm, off the Sussex coast, is a 400 MW project developed by E.ON and now operated by RWE. Commissioned in April 2018, it was the first offshore wind farm on England’s south coast, built at a cost of £1.3 billion. Originally planned at 700 MW, it was scaled back during design but still generates enough power for hundreds of thousands of homes.
Located 13–25 km offshore, Rampion spans 72 km² between Worthing, Brighton, and Newhaven, with 116 turbines each 140 metres tall. Its name, chosen by local students, honours the round-headed rampion, or Pride of Sussex, the county flower.
Construction began in 2015, with grid connection at Bolney and offshore installation completed by 2017. The Port of Newhaven serves as its maintenance base. In 2020, Rampion produced 1,600 GWh, exceeding its targets and confirming its place as a key clean energy source for southern England.
