Thanet Offshore Wind Farm
The Thanet Offshore Wind Farm, located 11 km off the Kent coast, was the world’s largest offshore wind farm when it opened in 2010. Built for around £800–900 million, it has a 300 MW capacity, supplying power to about 240,000 homes, and was the first Round 2 offshore project completed in the UK.
Spanning 35 km², the farm’s turbines sit in waters 14–23 metres deep, spaced roughly 500–800 metres apart. Power is stepped up from 33 kV to 132 kV at an offshore substation and brought ashore at Richborough, Kent, via cables by Prysmian.
Maintained by Vestas and SLP Energy, Thanet produces around 800–960 GWh annually with a 33% capacity factor. Though surpassed in scale, it remains a milestone project that helped cement the UK’s leadership in offshore wind.
