The West of Duddon Sands Offshore Wind Farm (WoDS) lies 14 km southwest of Walney Island in the Irish Sea and has a total capacity of 389 MW. Developed jointly by ScottishPower Renewables and Ørsted (formerly DONG Energy), it covers 67 km² and sits near the Walney, Ormonde, and Barrow wind farms.

Originally awarded in 2003 under the UK’s Round 2 offshore leasing programme, planning permission was granted in 2008 for up to 108 turbines. The final design used Siemens 3.6 MW turbines, with power exported to shore via 155 kV NKT subsea cables and 22 km of land cables, connecting to the UK National Grid.

Construction began in 2012, with turbines installed through 2013–2014. Officially inaugurated in October 2014, the £1.6 billion project now generates enough renewable electricity to power around 270,000 homes, reinforcing Cumbria’s position as a key hub for UK offshore wind energy.
