Whitelee Wind Farm
Whitelee Wind Farm, located on Eaglesham Moor about 15 km south of Glasgow, is the UK’s largest onshore wind farm. It has 215 turbines generating up to 539 MW — enough to power over 350,000 homes. Built and operated by ScottishPower Renewables (part of Iberdrola), it sits 300 metres above sea level across East Renfrewshire, East Ayrshire, and South Lanarkshire. Opened officially in 2009, Whitelee played a major role in meeting Scotland’s renewable energy targets and showed that large-scale wind generation could work close to a major city.
What makes Whitelee unique is its strong public focus. It was one of the first UK wind farms built with a visitor centre, run by Glasgow Science Centre, offering interactive exhibits, a café, and free EV charging. The site also has over 130 km of trails for walking, cycling, and horse riding, supported by the Whitelee Countryside Ranger Service. The rangers organise guided walks, school trips, and community events that promote outdoor access and renewable energy awareness.
Whitelee has become a popular outdoor destination and eco-tourism site. With more than 700,000 visitors recorded by 2020, Whitelee is both a landmark of Scotland’s clean energy transition and a model for how renewable projects can support recreation, education, and local communities.
