The Viking Wind Farm on Shetland is one of the UK’s largest onshore projects, generating 443 MW of power. Developed by Viking Energy — a partnership between Shetland Islands Council and SSE Renewables — it was completed in August 2024 alongside the new Shetland HVDC Connection, linking the islands to the mainland grid for the first time.

First proposed in 2005, the scheme evolved through years of planning and environmental review before gaining final approval in 2015. The £550 million project includes 103 turbines across central Shetland and is expected to bring £20 million a year in community income while supporting hundreds of jobs.

Standing up to 145 metres tall, the turbines capture Shetland’s powerful Atlantic winds with exceptional efficiency. Now operational, Viking delivers clean energy to homes across the UK and represents a major milestone in Scotland’s renewable energy ambitions.
